Dans l'agencement de bureaux et de grands magasins de la fin des années 1960, les cloisonnements modulaires ou les systèmes artificiels d’éclairage et d’air conditionné intégrés aux plafonds créent une idée d’espace flexible héritier du plan libre : l’open space. Sur fond de contestation des jeunes et des ouvriers d'Italie, des avant-gardes florentines transposent ces systèmes à l’échelle de l'espace public. C’est dans ce contexte, rendu particulier en Italie par les analyses marxistes de phénomènes métropolitains et territoriaux, que naît le projet des Archizoom de la No-Stop City, Residential Parkings, Climatic Universal System (1969-1972). C'est à un voyage intérieur au sein de ce pays de cocagne pop que nous convie Roberto Gargiani.

Au cours de sa longue carrière, Pier Luigi Nervi a exploré le potentiel du béton par la mise en place et la préfabrication d'éléments en béton armé ou en ferrociment, matériau qu'il a inventé et breveté pendant la guerre. Toutes ses œuvres les plus connues, telles que le Stade de Florence, les hangars construits à Orivieto, Orbetello et Torre del Lago Puccini, les Halls du Palazzo di Torino Esposizioni à Turin, les bâtiments de l'Unesco à Paris, le Palazzetto dello Sport à Rome et L'Aula per le Udienze au Vatican constituent un chapitre important dans l'histoire de l'architecture, de la structure et de la construction du XXe siècle. La passion de Nervi pour le processus de fabrication du béton et du coffrage est examinée de façon systématique dans le volume. Les auteurs illustrent le processus créatif de Nervi à travers l'examen de dessins non publiés, de dessins, de spécifications, de photos de chantiers et de correspondance avec des collègues et des collaborateurs.

In this book, the projects, buildings and theories of Koolhaas, as well as the other members of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, are examined in chronological and thematic sequence, beginning with the period of Koolhaas’ education at the Architectural Association School of Architecture of London in the cultural context of the neo-avant-gardes at the end of the 60s and at the beginning of the 70s. The essay then discusses the period of his stay in New-York, his contact with Ungers, Eisenman, Rowe, as well as the polemic confrontation with the emerging post-modernism movement; and it concludes with the last critical contributions of Koolhaas. The starting point is design, which, in the case of Koolhaas, usually grows out of an alchemy of logic, influenced both by the proposed program (as viewed by the clients and institutions) and the metaphorical and autobiographical aspiration of the artist. The analysis is carried through to the details of construction, with special attention paid to the choice of materials, the configuration of the structure, and the role and position of the installation. The book is richly illustrated and includes an exhaustive bibliography.

Le moment est venu d’archiver l’« architecture radicale ». Mais cela signifie de considérer ce moment comme le chapitre clé d’une trajectoire culturelle qui porte un autre titre : celui d’une architecture rationaliste comprise comme l’une des composantes du Mouvement moderne les plus expérimentales : machine à habiter, existenzminimum, less is more, etc. En se cantonnant à la période comprise entre mars et décembre 1969, Gargiani et Lampariello offrent ici une généalogie serrée du groupe Superstudio à travers leur iconique projet de Monument Continu. Les deux historiens reviennent sur leurs territoires philosophiques et mystiques, mais aussi sur ce qui rendit énigmatique et si fascinant leur hyper-rationalisme dans une époque de profonde rénovation sociale.

Grand Dessein du Rationalisme is a hybrid publication that gathers 18 architecture projects from the student collectives of Roberto Gargiani’s Superstudio at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, 2020–2021, and a series of 13 theoretical, practical and historical reflections on (antagonist) rationalism in architecture. At the outset of this project, we agreed, together with Roberto Gargiani and Marson Korbi, to create a hybrid publication that mediates the format of the collection of student projects with a series of theoretical and practical reflections on (antagonist) rationalism in architecture. They tapped into the diverse list of guests who, during the same academic year, had intervened in the studio for a lecture, soliciting original contributions that, given their quality, could easily make it into a specific book on the topic.Still, this book intends to respect the provisional nature of student projects by assuming a certain economy of means. The texts in French and English, the working languages of students at EPFL, were included without translation in the project descriptions and in the 13 contributions. We were confident that readers would easily switch between the two languages, or be happy with half. The pair of A0 drawings that each student collective presented as the end result of their work, the “grands desseins” of a Platforme and a Ville Verte, are here reproduced on each side of an A2 poster, simply folded and inserted behind the front cover, unbound. They can be thumbed through as a fascicle or unfolded one by one, while excerpts of the same drawings allow readers to trace them back to the respective manifesto printed near the end of the book.The concepts that the students manipulated in their projects are set out in the Superstudio Manifesto that they received at the beginning of the academic year, printed on the following pages. After this, Roberto Gargiani’s text “Antagonist Rationalism” inaugurates a series of contributions addressing the different subthemes that structure the book in two main sections: “Incomplete Rationalism / Actualité du Rationalisme” and “Multitude, Commons, Antagonisme, Metropolis”. The collective text by Natalie Donat-Cattin, Silvia Groaz, Boris Hamzeian and Marson Korbi, the course assistants, intercedes between the contributions and the set of manifestos written by each collective to accompany their graphic work.
